• Plant Passport

On December 14, 2019, the new Plant Protection Ordinance 2016/2031 / EU enters into force. This replaces the current European Plant Protection Directive 200/29 / EC.

For which plants does the extension of the plant passport requirement apply?

The plant passport covers all "plants intended for planting".

Flower bulbs are also affected.

What must the plant passport look like?

A fixed format was defined with the following elements:

  • in the upper left corner: the EU flag (Color or black and white)
  • in the upper right corner: the word „Plant Passport“
  • „A“ + botanical name
  • „B“ + ISO code of the Member State, Hyphen, phytosanitary Registration number (9 digits)
  • „C“ + traceability code
  • „D“ + ISO code country of origin / production.

How to implement the plant pass?

There are several ways to apply the plant passport to your product.

  • Print the plant passport on stock cards, which must then be placed in the pot.
  • Print the plant passport on an (additional) plant label, which must be hung on the plant.
  • Print the plant passport on the tray.
  • Print the plant passport on the pot.
  • etc.

Important for the choice is that the law requires that the plant passport must be applied per smallest trading unit. For example, potted plants sold through auction, plant pass per pot, tray, box, etc. is required. In this case, traders can easily split the lot without requiring a new plant passport.

With which coding system can I print a plant passport?

Type and material of the product determines which options are appropriate.
Different coding techniques have different strengths depending on your specific applications.

The continuous inkjet systems are suitable for direct printing on pots, trays etc.

Among other things, the DOD inkjet systems are suitable for printing on stock cards, plant labels and (cardboard) cards, which can be inserted into the slot provided in the magazine, but also for direct printing on cartons.

The thermal transfer systems are very suitable for printing on films.

With the help of the offline solution udaFORMAXX, a plant pass can be easily and quickly printed offline on plano products such as stock cards, plant labels and (cardboard) cards.

By installing two alphaJET inkjet printers on opposite sides of a conveyor belt, it is also possible to mark potted plants in one step with

  •  the EU plant passport, and
  •  an individual, machine-readable EAN 13 barcode

In contrast to a label solution, the code is printed horizontally. This looks better, is more professional and simplifies scanning at the cash register in retail stores.

Shape and size may vary, so you can choose the size that suits your pot best. The areas with the letters A, B, C and D must be recognizable. The prerequisite is that the plant pass is visible to the naked eye and is visible at a glance.
