FAQs
A plant passport is an official certification required within the European Union (EU) for the movement of plants, plant products, and certain regulated items across member states. It acts as proof that the plants meet EU phytosanitary standards and are free from pests or diseases that could harm agriculture or ecosystems. The passport includes detailed information such as the botanical name of the plant, traceability codes, and the country of origin. Its purpose is to ensure transparency and enable the tracking of plants throughout their supply chain, reducing the risk of spreading harmful organisms within the EU.
A plant passport is required by professional operators involved in producing, trading, or transporting plants within the European Union. This includes nurseries, growers, wholesalers, and retailers who deal with plants intended for planting, including seeds and certain wood products. These requirements apply to ensure that plants meet the necessary health standards before entering the market or being transported across borders. By using plant passports, these operators can guarantee traceability, maintain compliance with EU regulations, and support efforts to safeguard plant health throughout the supply chain.
A plant passport includes several standardized elements to ensure uniformity and traceability:
EU Flag: Located in the top left corner, indicating that the product complies with EU phytosanitary regulations.
"Plant Passport" Title: Displayed at the top right to clearly identify the document.
Section A: The scientific name (botanical name) of the plant species.
Section B: The two-letter ISO country code of the EU member state, followed by the operator’s registration number.
Section C: A unique traceability code, such as a batch or lot number, enabling tracking of the product.
Section D: The country of origin, identified by its ISO code.
By interpreting these sections, users can verify the plant's compliance, trace its origin, and ensure that it meets health and safety requirements at every stage of its journey. This standardized format facilitates clear communication and accurate record-keeping across borders.
A plant passport is necessary to prevent the spread of plant diseases and pests within the European Union. It ensures that all plants and plant products being transported or sold comply with EU plant health regulations. For businesses, having a plant passport is a legal requirement for trading specific plants; and it helps maintain smooth operations while avoiding penalties for non-compliance. Beyond legal obligations, the plant passport also reinforces consumer trust by ensuring that the products meet strict health and safety standards, contributing to the protection of both the agricultural sector and natural environments.
